Remember, you are joining an online dating service because you want a change in your life. Your current model for meeting singles isn’t working as you would like. You are tired of being alone and you are looking for someone to share your day-to-day activities with. A few minutes of what you perceive to be “embarrassment” with a friend who values you for who you are is really a small inconvenience.

You don’t actually get to “talk” to someone until you’ve progressed pretty far into the relationship.

This leads to the big question, what’s the best way to get in touch with a profile that you’re interested in?

As a free member of a site, you usually are not able to contact the paid members. This privilege is withheld from you until you reach into your back pocket and pull out your credit card to pay for a membership. Once you do this, you usually will have two different options to choose from.

Most sites offer some sort of initial contact to let someone know that you found their profile interesting. Many of the sites use the same terminology by calling it either a “wink” or an “icebreaker,” but its purpose is to let them know that you’re interested.

1) Isn’t Online Dating just full of losers and weirdos?

2) I don’t want to put my photo up. What if someone I know sees it?
In order to see your photo, they would have to be on the dating site themselves. Most people don’t have an issue putting their photo on social media sites like Facebook, so why would you be worried about a private members site? I have written an article where I interviewed men who have used online dating services and actually went on real dates with women they met. Now I am going to interview some women who have met their dates through an online dating service to get their reaction and stories.

One note, while safety applies to both men and women, it needs to be said, that women need to be especially careful when deciding to actually meet any man they met online.

Women should talk to the guy through email and chat for awhile before even giving out a phone number. Remember that a phone number can be traced back to your address. Don’t think because your phone number is unlisted that you are protected.

The next step after emails and chat should be by phone. You can learn a lot about someone by talking on the phone and really listening to what they say. If they make you feel uncomfortable on the phone, then you don’t even want to take the next step and actually meet them.

If you do decide to meet the man you met through an online dating service, make sure you first meet in a very public place. Tell your friends where you are going and when you expect to return. Make the first date a short, get to know you, kind of date. One that is not scheduled to go longer, so you can go home and gather your thoughts before deciding whether or not you will date this man again.

Do not let him take you someplace secluded or in his vehicle anywhere on that first date. You may think you know him from all of the online and phone conversations, but abusers and abductors are very smart in the way they lure females into a trap. Be careful.

That being said, online dating can be a great way to meet some very nice men and maybe even find your soul mate. Using common sense is just a good idea. Now on with the interviews.

Of course, the women I am going to interview for the article wish to remain anonymous, so I will just call them Online Dater 1, 2, and 3.

We will begin with online dater 1; (a 27-year-old female)

Me: How did you hear about online dating?

Online Dater 1; My girlfriend at work actually married a guy she met through one of the online dating services and she urged me to try it at least once.

Me: Where and how did you meet your first online date?

Online Dater 1; I’m not sure I should tell you the website I use, but it is one that you can browse through the profiles of all the men that are available. I remember thinking it was like shopping. So it was fun. I found several profiles of guys I might like and emailed them. I received a lot of responses and began to chat with them by email. I let a couple of them call me on my cell phone and finally let one convince me to go out on a date.

Me: How long did you chat with this person online before you two decided to date in person?

Online Dater 1; Oh, about a month. I was a little leery and thought each of these guys must have something wrong with them to be here in the first place, but I guess that could apply to what they might be thinking about me too.

Me: What was it about them that made you want to meet them in person and did you feel they were your soul mate?

Online Dater 1; Okay, I’ll admit it. His picture got me. He was an absolute hunk and I had the hots for him right away. I still took my time about agreeing to an actual date. I couldn’t understand why he would need to use an online dating service.

Me: Was your first impression of him, upon seeing him in person a surprise, a positive reaction, or a negative reaction?

Online Dater 1; Totally positive. He was better than his picture!

Me: So, tell us what happened after meeting him in person.

Online Dater 1; We dated a few times. We really hit it off. We had a lot of the same interests, just like they were in the comparison charts at the online dating website. We are still seeing each other after 9 months. He hasn’t popped the question, but the answer is going to be yes!

Okay, next I will be talking to a 19-year-old female about her experience.

Me: How did you hear about online dating?

Online Dater 2; I clicked on a link in an email that looked interesting.

Me: Where did you meet your first online date?

Online Dater 2; Through the 3rd online dating service that I signed up for. I didn’t like the first two very much. Too, well, old style.

Me: How long did you chat with this person online before you two decided to meet in person?

Online Dater 2; About a week.

Me: What was it about them that made you want to meet them in person and did you feel they were your soul mate?

Online Dater 2; I didn’t think he was my soul mate or anything like that, but he was really a cool guy and we both liked the same music and clubs. It turned out we had been to a lot of the same spots but never met.

Me: Was your first impression of him, upon seeing him in person a surprise, a positive reaction, or a negative reaction?

Online Dater 2; I’d say positive. He was like in his picture and all, but a little shorter than I pictured him.

Me: So, tell us what happened after meeting him in person.

Online Dater 2; Well, we went out a few times and had a good time, but like I said, I never expected him to be the one, you know. It was fun. He still calls once in awhile and I might date him again, but I’m still talking with other guys on the dating service and might try another date from there soon.

Last, a 41-year-old female shares her online dating experience with us.

Me: How did you hear about online dating?

Online Dater 3; I saw an ad on television for a very popular dating service. I was alone and thought it couldn’t hurt to try it out. I work a lot and don’t have much chance for a social life, but thought I needed to get back into the game, if you know what I mean.

Me: Where did you meet your first online date?

Online Dater 3; Through the website I signed up for from the ad..

Me: How long did you chat with this person online before you two decided to meet in person?

Online Dater 3; Almost 6 months. As I said I work a lot and he was a professional, a lawyer, so his time was limited too. We would contact each other every day after work and talk about how our day went.

Me: What was it about them that made you want to meet them in person and did you feel they were your soul mate?

Online Dater 3; Well, it was me who finally asked him out instead of the other way around. I just decided it was time to meet him. I had been talking to him everyday so it was already like coming home to hear him say, How was your day?

Me: Was your first impression of him, upon seeing him in person a surprise, a positive reaction, or a negative reaction?

Online Dater 3; He was exactly what I expected. He had sent me many pictures so I would know what he looked like and I had sent him several as well. So there were no surprises there.

Me: So, tell us what happened after meeting him in person.

Online Dater 3; We’re married. We’ve been married now for almost a year, but everything is great! It’s not like he was my fantasy guy or anything so corny. He is a nice man. We got to know each other over that time online. And when we met, the conversations picked up right where we left off online. It was just natural after dating in person for about 6 weeks, that he asked me and I accepted.

In conclusion, these were some pretty positive interviews with people who have met someone through an online dating service and met someone they wanted to date in person. They all had success in varying degrees. But it does sound like something I might try now that I’ve heard their experiences.

In my experience the best thing to do is take a chance, because if you do not the opportunity might not ever come around again. If you think the date went fabulously, then you should try to ask if you can come inside or at least try to give her a kiss. If you do not “make a move” then your date might think that you do not like her, and never want to go out with you again. The worst that can happen to you if you try something is you can get shot down.

I had a friend once that went out with one of the most beautiful girls in our school. He took her out to eat dinner and then they went to see a horror movie. My friend and his date had a great conversation at dinner and really hit it off. Then during the movie they got very close and continued to develop great chemistry. At the end of the movie my friend drove his date home, and proceeded to walk her to the door. He really wanted to see if he could come inside and continue the date because he was having such a great time. However he was too scared to ask, because he was afraid of getting his feelings hurt if she did not want him to. So instead he leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. Then he told her he would call her sometime and went home. A few days later he called her to see if she wanted to do something, but she told him that she had decided to date someone else because she did not think that he was interested in her.

The only problem with this is that his date did the same, and when the song ended she was laughing at him. Leslie then told John that she could not be seen out in public with a guy like him, so she told him that the date was over. John was very sad, but another beautiful woman named Jane walked over to him on the dance floor and told him she loved his moves. Not too long after that night John and Jane were married and they lived happily ever after.

Although he didn’t turn out to be “the one”, when I asked if she regretted joining an online dating site her answer was "Definitely not!" Her view was that if she hadn’t joined an online dating site, those 6 months would have been spent moaning about meeting the same time wasters in the same old haunts and wondering "what if". She was simply being proactive in her search for love; after all life is far too short!

If your mother always told you how smart and handsome you are you may want to rethink the way you describe yourself. Instead try writing things that you like doing. You can also describe what you are doing briefly; unless you have a lousy job like a clown.

4. When writing about the type of person you are looking for, try to be briefly descriptive but still have some vague scope. Here's a bad example, I'm looking for a Donald Trump kind of Guy. This will only attract rich guys or those that wear wigs.

5. Try not to be sexual on dating site profiles. If you are trying to be sexual there are other kinds of websites for you.

The important thing to remember in creating your profile is try not to write what you don't want. Instead write what you are looking for. Another important thing to remember in online dating is that since it gives you more chances to find a date, it will also give you more chances that the date could be a dud. That's why when relying on online dating sites, you should have a very open mind.

Pleats let you walk comfortably while looking professional and help a bigger man look great while cuffs will add weight to the bottoms of your pants sometimes giving them the perfect drape.

10. Socks with Sandals. Even if you live in Maine, don't do it - you'll look like a schmuck.

11. Chunky Shoes. Lose them, the Axel Rose era is over.

12. Backpacks. Alright, maybe this is just a minor mistake, but you're trying to climb the corporate ladder, not hike up Mount Everest.

13. Clashing or too many colors. Do you really want to look like a gay pride flag? Stick to complementary colors (those opposite from each other on the color wheel) or colors from the same pallet. You can find one on the web very easily by searching on Google!

14. Ponytails. You're not the rock star of your office. Spend the 20$ for a haircut, you can afford it.

Jewelry is huge and it’s not just in popularity. The earrings and necklaces are very large and some are rather stunning. However, pearls are also popular. Your feet certainly won’t thank you this year, as heels are higher than ever. Heels are seen with every look from formal to casual. Gold is a must have this season. Anyone seeking to part you from your cash will only use an anonymous payment provider such as Paypal or Western Union. They will never share their bank details with you, and under no circumstances should you share your bank details with them.

Another scam to be aware of is someone who immediately asks for your email address. Once you give out your address you are swamped by spam and never hear from that person again. It is very difficult to avoid this scam as email is your initail point of contact, but it might be a good idea to use an anonymous email account, such as Hotmail or go.com, until you are confident that the person with whom you are communicating is genuine.

I have outlined a couple of online dating scams that you should be aware of, but remember that the vast majority of people that you meet online will be genuine and looking for similar things to you.

There will always be a few who spoil things for the rest of us, but this does not mean that we should treat everyone we meet online with suspicion. Caution is all that is required because there are always signs to alert us to danger if we know how to identify them.

Sometimes people outgrow their friends or simply move on. This is okay. It’s a normal part of life. Don’t feel guilty about it.

“Keepers” are relationships that matter. A relationship may be important because of whom the other person is to you, or the relationship may matter because of what it brings to your life. For example, a friendship that adds fun, joy or some other great quality to your time on this Earth is worth investing in.

Just as plants in a garden need to be pruned and watered, “Keeper” relationships need to be managed with healthy boundaries and proactive scheduling. Too often, we fail to set healthy boundaries with those “Keeper” folks that drive us crazy–yes, everybody has those. The permanent nature of these relationships tempts us to take the attitude that “it is what it is” and never consider breaking out of old, dysfunctional patterns. Setting healthy boundaries is like pruning a shrub that has taken on an undesirable shape. Plants not only need to be pruned, they also need to be nurtured in order to flourish. So often the significant relationships in our lives may go untended. When was the last time you went on a date with your significant other, had a road trip your best buddy, a heart-to-heart talk with your best friend? Investing in these ways gives relationships the water they need to grow.

Evaluate which individuals currently in your life have the most positive or least negative effect on you. Make it a priority to schedule more time with these people, rather than getting together with the people who drag you down. Don’t fall into the trap of hanging out with someone who is a negative influence, simply because it is easier or requires less planning. Be sure to take time for the people who make you laugh, feed your spirit and make life worth living. These relationships foster your growth and help you to become your best self, which you can then offer to those you love.

There are times when we need to make ourselves available to offer support to someone who is going through a difficult time. We can listen to people vent their feelings about personal experiences they’ve had without trying to “fix” them or force them to put on a happy face. Every life has its storms, and you may choose to “be there” for a friend. When this occurs, I recommend trying to balance out the draining effect that these times can have by balancing out the negative with more positive. Give yourself permission to let some things that don’t really matter slide. Do more of what you love, whether it’s a hobby, spending time alone reading or whatever fills you up. Living a positive, healthy lifestyle is not only about restricting the influx of negative influences, but also about letting more of the good stuff in.

Remember to be on the lookout for new, positive, emotionally healthy people who enter your life. If you continually put forth the effort, you will find at least one. It is work to find such people, but the payoff is immeasurable.

Dating after a divorce is tough. Let's face it, getting back into dating at any time is a minefield. You don't quite know where to start so here are a few internet dating mistakes and their solutions.

1. Too much too soon
So you have been ploughing through those endless profiles on your internet dating site and have come up with someone who interests you. There has been an exchange of emails. He sounds fun and witty and you begin to look forward to his messages. You find yourself getting up earlier in the morning just to log on while you drink your coffee to see if he has sent a response to your latest remarks. During the day you compile witty replies in your head and suggestive lines to throw his way. This has gone on for a couple of weeks and he suddenly asks if he can call you. Your chest expands; you are really excited and arrange a time. Now you are curled up in your favorite chair waiting for the call. Guess what, it goes well, the same light banter, his voice is not what you expect but that is OK. You talk for an hour. This becomes a daily ritual which you begin to plan your time around. And then he invites you to dinner.

2. Throwing money at it
It has been a while since someone invited you out to dinner (you may be just starting dating after your divorce). Your immediate thought is what to wear, need my hair done etc. This means that you spend the best part of a week running around with the one thought in your mind "I must get this right". You seem to have disappeared and you feel that you need to invent a new person to go on this date. In order to be that person you have to package yourself in some particular way. There must be some key that you can find, a particular dress, new haircut etc. You believe that you need to make yourself more appealing.

3. Thinking that you know the person
The evening has arrived and you meet at the arranged restaurant (good step, as all the dating advice recommends that you meet in a public place). You are especially nervous and excited but also slightly uncomfortable because the shoes are new and you feel a bit wobbly in them. It is strange you recognise this person but at the same time you don't. The voice you know that but he does not look like the person in the photograph, taller, shorter a bit heavier or gangly something is not as you imagined. Anyway he seems quite at ease but maybe that is just a contrast to how you are feeling. Initially conversation is going well as there are points of contact from your previous conversations but it isn't going anywhere. By the main course you are starting to drink a little too much to fill in the silences. Your feet really hurt now and you are taking surreptitious glances at your watch - only 9 o'clock. No dessert thanks and by the way you have an early start in the office tomorrow so you have to go soon. Can't think of anything but getting out of the shoes. Yes it was good, do call me.

4. Fantasy - it's only in your head
Next day or later in the week, the emails/calls are still coming and you continue to respond. It's as though you have never met and you can get on with the easy going repartee that has become almost a habit. In your mind he is something you want him to be, well not quite, but you can have yourself believe that he is while you exchange messages and late night calls. You are starting to develop a whole life in your head around this person, you imagine where you can live with him, what you will do, holidays together- in fact everything you ever want with someone. This is taking up a lot of head space but that is enjoyable in itself, you feel connected to someone if only in your mind.

5. Not paying attention to the signals
A week or so more and you are becoming slightly irritated by the emails and are not responding quite so readily. But he asks you if you want to come out for another evening and that heart leaps to your throat again. You agree even though there is a vague memory of discomfort from the first meeting. Well you remind yourself that all the dating advice recommends that it is about getting to know someone. I can't expect to feel comfortable about everything immediately. He is suggesting dinner again, you don't really want to but you are not sure what you want to do so you go along with it. You had arranged to see a girl-friend that night but you tell her you can't make it, she seems a bit put-out but you put that thought aside.

The second evening seems very long.

Too much too soon - It is so tempting to put all your focus on one person at a time when you are looking to date on the internet. But it is important to remember that not only are all those people out there looking at numerous people at any one time but you could be too. If you put most of your time and energy into any one contact at a very early stage this means that you cannot scout, screen and sort other possible people.

Dating Advice: Don't make a big investment emotionally in any relationship without solid foundations.

Throwing money at it - Recent research has revealed that online daters are spending up to Ł1,500 a month taking out people who they realise, after the first 15 minutes are not for them. (Independent, June 2005) Remember be authentic, the packaging is only that and is not who you are. Meeting for a cup of coffee or a drink will give you enough time to assess whether this person is someone you want to know better.

Dating Advice: Packaging is not the answer, be clear about who you are, what you want in a relationship and set about finding it in a considered way.

Thinking you know this person - We can easily be seduced by email conversations and late night telephone calls. Apart from the actual chemistry that is missing in these exchanges there is that part that you know very well yourself, where you just reveal what you want at any given time. If you know what your requirements are in a relationship this will help you assess quite quickly if this person is for you. Most of us allow things to just drift along and are not pro-active in having a plan for ourselves when it comes to relationships.

Fantasy - it's only in your head - It is very easy to live in the fantasy of a relationship even from a very early stage. If so then you can continue to find out more about them whilst finding out about other people at the same time. Dating Advice: Spread the emotional load by giving your attention to a number of people, it helps deal with the ups and downs of the dating cycle if you are not exclusive right from the start.

Not paying enough attention to the signals - it is amazing how quickly we can get ourselves into habits and relationships, however new, are one of those areas. We all like attention and contact with people but what about the rest of your life, those friends who have been around for you, your family. Anyone who might be for you will, you hope, want to share life with a person who has a balanced life and that includes all the other activities and people in your life. Straining towards exclusivity at a very early stage and throwing all your time and attention towards the relationship can be a disaster.

The Devil is in the Details

My grandmother always said that the devil is in the details and I've always found that to be true. The details of your online profile should really identify what you're all about and what you're looking for in a relationship.

If there are certain types of people that you are absolutely not interested in, say it in your profile but try to keep it positive. If you don't like pop music, you might say something like.

"Music is my life. To me there is only one great genre of music - ROCK. If you love rock music as much as I do, let's meet. Online Dating Liars - How To Spot Them

Successful relationships are based on trust and mutual respect. If you don't have these qualities you don't have a relationship. But how can you tell whether someone you meet through online dating is lying to you?

Well, if the full extent of your contact is limited to emails, website messages and IMs, that doesn't give you much to work with, but there are still certain signs that you can look for.

You're chances of spotting a liar are greatly increased if you communicate through voice chat or even better video chat. But the best chance of catching out a liar is when you meet them in person as this allows your to watch their body language.

Although the person is consciously telling you one thing, their body will be subconsciously telling you something else, unless you've met an extremely good liar.

Number One: Movement (works for video chat and face to face meetings)

In general, when someone's just told you a whopper, they tend to get restless and twitchy. They make more micro movements such as shuffling their feet, or shifting their weight on the chair.

They may also make other subconscious self affirming gestures such as rubbing their ear lobe or touching the bridge or their nose (it's comforting because the hand partially obscures eye contact).

Number Two: Eye Contact (works for video chat and face to face meetings)

It's commonly said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and this is certainly true when it comes to lying.

When most people tell a lie, they find it difficult to maintain eye contact. It's almost as if they're frightened that you'll see through their lie if you can look them in the eye.

In contrast, people who have told the truth have nothing to hide and are able to maintain better levels of eye contact.

So if you have an inkling that your online date is fibbing, look them straight in the eye as you talk to them. If they struggle to meet your gaze, they might have something to hide.

Number Three: Details (works for video chat, voice chat, email, IM and face to face meetings)

Another problem that liars tend to have is the amount of detail that they add to their stories. Either they gloss over the story surrounding their lie, giving the barest of details, or they over compensate and provide too many details (almost as if they're trying to convince themselves that what they're saying is the truth).

Number Four: Conflicting Stories (works for video chat, voice chat, email, IM and face to face meetings)

And finally, if a person keeps telling you lies, they will eventually back themselves into a corner or forget what they've already told you and contradict themselves.

So if you suspect that someone online is hiding the truth from you, keep probing and you might find out more than you expect.

Ask them questions about the issue. Try and get them to give you more details. Reluctance to back up their story is a good sign that they're not being 100% truthful. If they skirt around the issue or try to change the subject, make a mental note and go back to it later, rephrasing your question and approaching the subject from a different angle.

If you start to close in on a lie, the other person may become more animated and provide too many details in an attempt to make their story sound believable. If they do this, look out for pauses in their speech where they might be trying to buy some time to create a cover story off the top of their head.

Alternatively, you may find that the other person becomes defensive, asking you why you want to know so much or even accusing you of not trusting them. These are strong signs that they've got something to hide.

People don't like getting caught out when telling lies, so they'll go to extraordinary lengths to avoid this happening. But if they won't tell you any more or their stories just don't add up, you've got a major decision to make.

First and foremost, your online profile should be truthful. There are plenty of wonderful people that you will meet who will appreciate you for who you are so skip the lies and stick to the truth. If you exaggerate your physical appearance, you miss out on finding the person who is attracted to the real you.

Don’t take high school photos and place them on your profile when you know that you haven’t looked that way for at least twenty years. DON’T: overdo the aftershave

Scruffy shoes will imply you have made no effort for the person you are dating. One last dating rule for shoes: never, ever, wear socks with sandals.
